Tierra Verde Community Overlay
The following information posted with permission of Pinellas County, is available online at www.pinellascounty.org/Plan/tierraverde.htm. Please share this information with other Friends of Tierra Verde. Thank you!
On December 19, 2007, the Pinellas County Planning Department mailed a proposal to establish a Community Overlay for the Tierra Verde community to all property owners in Tierra Verde. The packet mailed included a map identifying the boundary of the Tierra Verde community and a proposed Vision, objectives and policies that would be adopted as part of the Pinellas County Comprehensive Plan if there was sufficient support from property owners in Tierra Verde. The packet also included a self-addressed stamped postcard by which property owners could vote either "Yes" or "No" on whether they support the proposed Community Overlay.
At the December 3, 2007 public meeting in Tierra Verde, there was a unanimous decision by those in attendance to submit the Community Overlay proposal (as modified at the public meeting) to Tierra Verde property owners for a vote to determine the level of support for moving forward. It was understood that at least 60 percent of the returned postcards would need to support the proposal in order for the Tierra Verde Community Overlay to be presented to the Board of County Commissioners for action.
A total of 2,228 packets were mailed to property owners in Tierra Verde. As of January 28, 2008, the results of the voting are as follows:
Yes (support the proposed Community Overlay) 877 (84.7%)
No (do not support the proposed Overlay) 159 (15.3%)
Total votes (representing 46.5% of mailed packets) 1,036
More than sixty percent of those property owners who voted support the proposed Tierra Verde Community Overlay, County staff will be preparing a proposed amendment to the Pinellas County Comprehensive Plan that would incorporate the Tierra Verde Community Overlay as part of the Plan.
Information on the proposed amendment to adopt the Tierra Verde Community Overlay will be provided on the
Pinellas
County webpage over the coming weeks to keep Tierra Verde up-to-date on this proposal and the upcoming public hearings. Tierra Verde Community and Civic Organizations
There are a number of civic organizations in our community, including Moms of Tierra Verde, Little League Baseball, and the Tierra Verde Women's Club (to name a few). For more information about these organizations, contact Friends of Tierra Verde by phone at 727-480-5954.
Attention Dog & Cat Owners
Friends has received a number of complaints about "the presents" left behind by pets. Owners, please, if your pet does its business any place other than in your own yard, please remove it by carrying a bag or scooper! I recommend recycling your plastic grocery bags and always carry two and do as I do, pick up any paper litter you find along the way. As a community, we have an obligation to keep our island clean!
Friends of Tierra Verde wishes to remind cat owners that it is best to keep cats indoors. There seems to be a growing number of stray and abandoned cats on the island. This is not responsible pet ownership! Our island is home to a fragile ecological system and we have a number of wildlife babies in the spring (bunnies, ground and tree nesting birds, snakes, turtles). All of these species are important to the balance of our ecosystem. There are feral animals (like raccoons) that may expose your cat to rabies or disease. Lawn treatment chemicals and fruit rat bait systems are toxic and potentially fatal to your pet. The extreme heat of summer dictates that you use sense and sensibility with the care of your pets...keep them indoors or provide plenty of shade and fresh water, do not leave pets in a car unattended or overexert them by taking them on your jog or bike ride. If your cat is an outdoor cat, at the very least, please make sure that it is spayed or neutered.
About Trash Cans
It has been brought to the attention of Friends of Tierra Verde that some homeowners are leaving their trash cans in their driveway. This is a deed restriction. Please keep all trash cans out of sight! Help keep our island beautiful!
Thank you for visiting Friends of Tierra Verde!
