MEETINGS & EVENTS
The Tierra Verde Long Range Planning Committee has upcoming public meetings planned. Call 727-867-9362 for more information. All residents of Tierra Verde are encouraged to attend meetings which will be held at 6PM at The Island Chapel in Tierra Verde. Be sure to read the Long Range Planning Commitee articles in The Island Reporter newspaper and try, if you can, to be present at these meetings. The future of our island is at stake and you should have a voice in this matter! For more information, contact the Tierra Verde Community Association.
For area meeting & event information, visit the Pinellas County Southwest Connection Center online at: www.pinellascounty.org/community/CCC/default.htm.
Visit the Citizens Bayway Task Force website www.BaywayTaskForce.org to view their upcoming meeting agenda (as part of the Bayway Bridges Task Force) and to learn more about progress with the Pinellas Bayway bridges and access tolls to Ft. De Soto Park. Friends wishes to congratulate CBTF for taking a lead role in 2008 in working to defeat the toll hike request.
Tierra Verde Community Overlay Plan:
News about the Tierra Verde Community Overlay Plan is available on the
News & Information page of this website.
To learn about the Overlay Plan, which is now part of the County's Comprehensive Plan, call the Pinellas County Planning Department at (727) 464-8200 or visit the County's website to view the plan online: www.pinellascounty.org/Plan/tierraverde.htm.
Partners in Planning Meetings:
The Overlay Program, first brought to the attention of islanders at a public forum hosted by Friends of Tierra Verde in 2004, has financial (and potential deed) implications for residents of Tierra Verde—not just TVCA members. Tierra Verde residents should plan to attend this meeting. Non-TVCA members are especially encouraged to attend. If unable to do so, should contact the Pinellas County Planning Department for information on the Overlay Program at (727) 464-8200.
A flyer for the Partners in Planning for the Future community meeting and map of the proposed Tierra Verde Community Overlay Proposed Boundary are included on the
Pinellas
County website at www.pinellascounty.org/plan/tierraverde.htm.
Look for island news, including articles concerning annexation and incorporation in upcoming issues of The Island Reporter. This monthly community newspaper is mailed to residents of Tierra Verde and other South Gulf Beaches communities. The paper is committed to presenting news and editorial features that impact our area. To learn more about the newspaper, visit www.TheIslandReporter.com or direct an email to Info@TheIslandReporter.com.
Friends of Tierra Verde Website
Recognized "As a Best" by The St. Petersburg Times:
Friends of Tierra Verde is pleased to announce that our website was featured in a recent article in the Neighborhood Times section of the St. Petersburg Times (Wednesday, October 11, 2006, Page 5). The article, entitled "Online Neighborhood Sites Keep Residents Connected," showcased a number of Pinellas County community sites offering a way for neighbors to log on, get news and voice their opinions about local goings-on. As the only website in the south gulf beaches area to be mentioned in the article, we are most proud of this recognition.
Friends of Tierra Verde Mission, Goals, and Agenda:
Since forming in 2004, the mission of Friends of Tierra Verde has been identified. Our primary goal is to provide a forum for an open dialogue between the entities that govern our community and between all residents, homeowners, renters, taxpayers, business owners, and friends of our community.
We urge Friends to engage in knowing what is going on in our community. Be aware of what is on the agenda each month of the Pinellas County Planning and Zoning Commission and for the County Board of Commissioners. Be sure to attend the Tierra Verde Community Association's monthly meetings whenever possible and visit their website often. And, as a friend to our community, if you wish to become more involved, consider becoming an advisory board member of Friends of Tierra Verde.
Our website is updated frequently and features many helpful links, including a blog page for the benefit of Friends to speak up and be heard. Use our blog page to post questions, raise concerns, and offer praise on behalf of a community hero or civic leader. Now is the time to get involved. Our future depends on it!
Friends of Tierra Verde 2009-10 Agenda:
Continue to seek community input and provide additional updates on the
Bayway Bridges project (We were successful in helping to defeat the bridge toll hikes in 2008!).
As an alternative to the potential threat of future annexation(s), bring alternate, viable concepts to the attention of all residents, like the idea of incorporating as a village. (Ongoing initiative.)
Explore ways of bringing all residents under the umbrella of one community organization, with the goal of 100% community participation (Ongoing initiative.)
Discuss implications of
Pinellas
County’s Overlay Program, a program brought to the attention of residents at a public forum hosted by Friends of Tierra Verde. (We were successful in bringing this initiative to the island. A mailer from Pinellas County went out to Tierra Verde homeowners in December 2007. The Overlay Plan has been approved. Additional information about the Tierra Verde Overlay Plan appears on the News & Information page of this website.)
Lobby to restrict density issues, including, but not limited to, zoning changes and height variances, and additional development, until the island has a localized disaster plan and the scope of this project has been sufficiently identified (i.e., weather, emergency, traffic, environmental, infrastructure concerns). (Ongoing initiative.)
Address the concerns of residents and bring them to the attention of TVCA and
Pinellas
County, with the aim of making our community more family-friendly and supportive of our small business base. (Ongoing initiative. See posts on blog page.)
Introduce landscaping and beautification awards, awards for holiday light displays, and other community-based concepts. (Friends introduced beautification awards in May 2007 as published in The Island Reporter. TVCA introduced holiday light display awards in December 2007, after Friends published an article about this issue in a 2007 issue of The Island Reporter)
Friends of Tierra Verde is not affiliated with any political party and is not associated with the Tierra Verde Community Association (TVCA), although several of our members are also members of TVCA. As a community-oriented, civic organization, we do not charge fees and have no hidden agenda.
